Introduction: Telecel Globe purchased 100% of the shares of U-COM Burundi in July 2008. U-COM operates GSM 900/1800, CDMA 800, and WIMAX (in Bujumbura) networks and is the market leader with 497,502 subscribers and over 72% market share as of June 2009.
Telecom Market: As of June 2009, the emerging telephony market in Burundi has a penetration rate of 8%, providing attractive opportunities for existing operators to grow.
U-COM Burundi competes with three other operators: Onatel/Onamob, the incumbent state owned fixed line and GSM operator; Africell, a Jordanian-owned company; and Econet Wireless, an African operator with presence in four different countries in the region. |
