Introduction: Telecel Globe purchased 100% of the shares of U-COM Burundi in July 2008. U-COM operates GSM 900/1800, CDMA 800, and WIMAX (in Bujumbura) networks and is the market leader with 497,502 subscribers and over 72% market share as of June 2009. 

Telecom Market: As of June 2009, the emerging telephony market in Burundi has a penetration rate of 8%, providing attractive opportunities for existing operators to grow.
U-COM Burundi competes with three other operators: Onatel/Onamob, the incumbent state owned fixed line and GSM operator; Africell, a Jordanian-owned company; and Econet Wireless, an African operator with presence in four different countries in the region.

Introduction: Telecel Globe purchased 100% of the shares of Telecel-RCA in July 2008. Telecel-RCA operates a GSM 900/1800 network and is currently leading with 189,839 subscribers and over 37% market share as of June 2009.

Telecom Market: The emerging telephony market in Central African Republic has a penetration rate of 9% as of June 2009, providing attractive opportunities for existing operators to grow. Mobile telecommunication services in the Central African Republic are provided by Telecel-RCA along with three other operators: NationLink, a partially state owned operator; Moov, a company owned by Etisalat; and Orange, an operator owned by France Telecom.

Introduction: Telecel Globe purchased 100% of the shares of Cell One in January 2009, who then was rebranded to be leo™ in September 2009. leo™ operates a GSM 900/1800/3G/HSDPA network, currently has around 180,863 subscribers and about 13% market share as of June 2009.

Telecom Market: The emerging telephony market in Namibia has a penetration rate of about 62% as of June 2009, providing attractive opportunities for existing operators to grow.
Telecommunication services in Namibia are provided by Cell One along with two other operators:

  • MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Limited), a GSM mobile operator partially owned by Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holding (NPTH) and Portugal Telecom (PT).  NPTH is 100% owned by the Government of the Republic of Namibia. 
  • Telecom Namibia, the incumbent fixed line and CDMA operator.  It is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Namibia through Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings Limited (NPTH).
